We strive to maintain excellence in covering all of the neccesary steps to keep your property looking safe and beautiful in every way.
Pruning & Maintenance
Tree pruning for health includes the removal of broken, diseased, or dead branches in order to prevent decay-producing fungi from penetrating and infecting other areas of your tree. The removal of live branches is occasionally necessary to allow increased exposure to sunlight and circulation of air within the canopy.
Tree pruning for appearance and restoration is essential for maximizing the beauty of formal plantings and landscapes. In particular, we advocate aesthetic tree care when the characteristic form of your trees have deteriorated.
Thinning (wind sail reduction) – Thinning is accomplished to reduce wind sail on large trees, allowing wind to pass through the tree, without blowing the tree over.
View Clearing - View Clearing is performed to enhance views with as little damage as possible to the trees. We also top trees, which entails the removal of the top part of the tree. This can provide views and visibility, as well as continuing to maintain solid tree coverage, at the bottom of the tree for privacy.
Our crew knows how to trim and prune all of the variety of trees that live in the South Bay. Whether your trees are eucalyptus, pine or palm – we know how to trim them properly so that you have beautiful healthy looking trees. We believe in leaving your yard clean so the only evidence of our having been to your home is your well manicured trees.
Removal & Stump Grinding
Finley’s safely removes trees of all sizes and types, whatever your reason may be. This includes removal of large trees from difficult spots. Trees are often surrounded by other valuable plantings or structures. Tree removal requires careful dismantling by highly trained personnel utilizing state-of-the-art machinery to ensure the safety and the protection of your home. The use of specialized equipment during tree removal services is determined by the conditions of your landscape, branch architecture, and the soundness of your tree. A standard tree removal includes taking down a tree, chipping all brush, cutting all wood into 20″ logs, cutting and grinding the stumps. For complete stump removal we will grind down to 8-15 inches below the grade. All that is left is a pile of shredded chips that can be easily removed or used as mulch for your garden or landscaping. Grinding is the easiest and most efficient way to remove tree stumps
Trees in danger of failure are obvious candidates for removal. The information below describes some of the circumstances that can lead to tree failure. Trees are designed to withstand storms, but all trees can fail – and defective trees fail sooner than healthy trees. A sound tree becomes potentially dangerous when the tree’s woody structure is weakened by one or more defects. During storms, pre-existing defects predispose trees to failure. Defects are detectable signs that a tree has an increased potential to fail.
One of the major warning signs of tree failure is a visible crack. Cracks form when the load exceeds the capacity of the stem to withstand the load. The vast majority of cracks are caused by improper closure of wounds, by the splitting of weak branch unions, or by flush-cut pruning. Cracks can occur in branches, stems or roots. The wood behind the crack may be sound, decayed, or missing (cavity). Several types of cracks can be found in trees and, like other defects, the severity of cracks ranges across a spectrum. Vertical cracks run with the wood grain, along the length of the tree and may appear as shear cracks, in rolled cracks, or ribbed cracks. Horizontal cracks run across the wood grain.
Cracks are hazardous when they compromise the structure of the tree by splitting the stem in two or when another defect, such as internal decay and a crack do not provide enough sound wood in the outer shell to support the tree. The presence of multiple cracks and decay indicates a very defective tree.
Homeowners and property managers are advised that tree failure is a major cause of property damage. Rain or high wind can cause a cracked tree to fail under its own weight. Homeowners worried about trees falling and damaging property should call us for a free inspection.
Cabling & Bracing
Cables and brace rods are supplemental structural supports intended to reduce the risk of failure of weak branches and multiple stems. Cables generally consist of extra high strength steel and are attached to bolts installed in the upper crown of a tree. They are intended to limit the movement of the supported branches so they are less likely to fail during heavy rain or wind conditions. Braces are thread rod that are installed through unions of weak branches and multiple stems to provide more rigid support from torsional (twisting) forces that can occur in heavy wind.
Supplemental structural support systems should only be installed based on a thorough inspection and evaluation of tree structure by our certified arborists. Materials and techniques must comply with published industry standards (American National Standards Institute A-300 Standards). Customers with supplemental structural support systems should contact Finley’s to inspect the system each year.
Tree Health Maintenance & Arborist Services
Pruning trees can be dangerous work. If pruning involves working on large trees the knowledge and use of specialized equipment is very important, not only for the safety of the person(s) pruning the tree but also for the surrounding property where the tree stands; homes, businesses, automobiles, on lookers and passers by can be put at serious and unnecessary risks’. Other considerations need to be taken as well when working on trees that are next-to or near-by electrical power lines or have electrical lines running through their branches. A professional arborist can provide the services of a trained crew, all the required safety equipment, liability insurance and of course the knowledge and experience that can only come with the job.
